COVID-19 infects great apes



Infectious diseases such as COVID-19 are a major concern for the conservation of great apes.

Great apes, like humans, are susceptible to infectious diseases, the introduction of human pathogens into the great ape population could lead to catastrophic losses.

Wild chimpanzees have been infected with the human coronavirus in Côte d'Ivoire, and great apes can be infected with many other human respiratory pathogens.
